A Grifton woman has been charged with child abuse after she allegedly left a 7-year-old boy alone in a car while she was inside an Internet sweepstakes business.

Shamekia Chapman, 26, of 1575 Honolulu Road, Grifton, was charged by Goldsboro police with three misdemeanor counts of child abuse and released.

Police said that they responded to the Internet sweepstakes business after receiving a telephone call from a concerned citizen around 11:30 p.m. Friday night.

Police said that when they arrived at the parking lot at 225 N.C. 11 South, they found a 7-year-old boy, a 10-year-old girl and a 6-year-old girl sitting in the car.

The car was not running at the time and the outside temperature was approximately 38 degrees, police said. The report did not indicate how long the children had been in the car or what the temperature was inside the car.

The children's last name is also Chapman, and they live at the same address as Ms. Chapman; however, the report did not say if the children were hers.
