A fight between two students at a Wayne County middle school before classes began this morning resulted in assistant principal Jamel Jones and a Goldsboro police officer being assaulted.
The incident, involving two fifth-grade students, reportedly took place in the assistant principal's office at Dillard Middle School, 1101 Devereaux St., in Goldsboro.
"It appeared that the two students were separated, but one student continued to be aggressive and assaulted the assistant principal," Wayne County Public Schools communications director Ken Derksen said.
Derksen confirmed that two students were involved in an altercation prior to the start of the school day today.
Law enforcement was notified, Derksen said, and were present when the situation escalated.
The call came in to 911 dispatch at 7:38 a.m.
Maj. Michael West of the Goldsboro Police Department said the students involved were 11 or 12 years old.
The students involved are minors and therefore cannot be identified.
"What it was is two students were fighting, one of them was taken to the principal's office by the principal and our SRO -- school resource officer Michelle Warren -- and continued fighting them," West said.
The student trashed the principal's office, he added.
Two additional GPD officers responded and the student was taken into custody.
The student remains at GPD headquarters at the time of this report, although charges have not yet been filed.
Ms. Warren sustained a broken finger during the altercation. Charges against the juvenile are pending, West said.
