Lexi Lewis, 11, a fifth-grader at Rosewood Elementary, presents her science fair project about which type of bubble gum makes the biggest bubbles at the Wayne County Science Fair on Saturday at Goldsboro High School. Her entry, "Bubble Go Pop," took third place in the grades 3-5 division of the fair.

The annual science fair for Wayne County Public School produced 30 winners in 13 categories, with 12 first-place finishers now advancing to the regional competition next month.

The local event, held Saturday at Goldsboro High School, had representatives from elementary through high school.

The regional contest, to be held Feb. 7 at UNC in Wilmington, is for those in third grade and up.

The district science fair had grades K-2 and 3-5 divisions, with middle and high school entries divided into categories of biological science, chemistry, earth/environmental science, physics and astronomy and technology and engineering.

But beyond producing an award-winning science project, the opportunity also helps students in other areas, Andy Forsleff, the district's lead teacher for science, said -- including doing research online and using library resources, performing experiments, using math to calculate results and English skills to document experimental findings.

"Our teachers are very creative in helping students become engaged in learning about science and its impact on the world around them," he said. "Science fair competitions are an extension of the classroom curriculum and allow students an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and interests in the various areas of this diverse field."
