2014: a look back

It was a year to remember, and to forget.

2014 is now over and the events that transpired in Wayne County during the year will become part of its long history.

It was a year of loss, with the deaths of several longtime county leaders such as Sheriff Carey Winders and Board of Education member Thelma Smith, and a year of gain, with the continued growth of the local economy and fresh leaders taking over key positions, both in the legal and political arenas as well as at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

It also was a violent year, with shootings and deaths in both the county and the city of Goldsboro -- some solved, some unsolved.

But it wasn't all bad. The North Carolina Pickle Festival and the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fair drew huge crowds, as did Cures for the Colors and the Relay for Life. Mount Olive College became the University of Mount Olive, and a Goldsboro native is now Miss North Carolina.

And the future looks bright, with the return of the Wings Over Wayne Air Show to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in 2015.
