The North Carolina Highway Patrol has released new details about a head-on collision on U.S. 70 West that left two people dead and at least one injured Monday afternoon.
Goldsboro resident Donna Sprinkle Morris, 60, of 101 Mint Drive, continued driving after her car struck five vehicles near the highway's intersection with Claridge Nursery Road, N.C. Highway Patrol First Sgt. G.L. Burton said. Her car then jumped the median and slammed into a husband and wife's car head-on, killing Ms. Morris.
Ms. Morris' vehicle came to rest on the opposite side of the road.
The other car, which was occupied by Goldsboro residents Krista Rose Foil, 33, and Edwin Allen Foil, of 2002 Margaret Drive, landed in the median.
Mrs. Foil died as a result of the collision.
Foil, who was driving, was treated and released at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Burton said an unknown medical condition caused Ms. Morris to crash into the other cars and to keep driving after the initial impact. In the intial five-car crash, several drivers sustained a few non-life-threatening injuries, Burton said.
The accident brought traffic to a halt for nearly two miles in the westbound lane on Highway 70 and significantly slowed down traffic in the eastbound lane, with highway patrolmen allowing cars to go around the wreckage at intervals.
Westbound traffic was rerouted down Claridge Nursery Road.
Since Thanksgiving, seven people have died in fatal crashes in the Wayne County area.
Three fatalities have been recorded in Wayne County, with another two in Wilson County and two more in Duplin County.
