The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating how three or more suspects were able to gain entry into the Quality Jewelry and Pawn shop early Wednesday morning.
According to an initial report, the would-be thieves entered through the flue of a brick pig cooker.
"I am not quite sure what that means," Sgt. Jeremy Sutton said. Sutton had not been to the scene, but said he assigned a pair of investigators to the case Wednesday morning.
He said he had seen the report and is taking it at face value.
"It looks like it's a pig cooker built on to the wall," he said.
The break-in happened at 3:30 a.m., triggering an alarm to which GPD patrol officers responded. Mark Throm, of Quality Jewelry and Pawn also responded, with a key to the business and a walk through was conducted.
Nothing was reported missing.
It was not until later in the day that employees discovered a piece of plywood inside the business leaning in to the interior of the building.
The plywood had been placed to cover a hole in the wall, which, according to the report, is a brick pig cooker.
The suspects' moving of the plywood cover and the items leaning on it is what activated the alarm, according to the report.
An employee's review of the store's security camera footage shows three men milling about behind the store at about 3 a.m., the report said. The men are shown moving security lights around and prying on the flue of the pig cooker.
A sledge hammer is also seen on the footage near the men, according to the report.
Investigators have not yet reviewed the footage for themselves, and no description of the suspects is listed on the report.
The cost of the damage to the plywood and the pig cooker flue is estimated at $300.
