A Craven County school bus carrying band members from New Bern High School back home from the Friday evening 4-A State Championship football came was involved in a wreck early Saturday morning that killed the driver of the SUV it was hit by.
According to the State Highway Patrol, no students were injured in the crash and the name of the person who died has not yet been released.
The bus, according to the investigation report, was traveling east on U.S. Highway 70 when the SUV driver tried to turn from a westbound lane. The collision occurred at the highway's intersection with N.C. 581, near the Rosewood Walmart.
The wreckage delayed traffic for several hours after lawmen and first-responders arrived at the scene just before 3 a.m.
Bystanders said the SUV ended up pinned underneath the school bus and that rescue workers attempted to save the driver, but that he died at the scene.
As of Saturday evening, no charges had been filed associated with the incident and the school bus driver is not believed to have been at fault.
It was also unclear if alcohol contributed to the accident or if speed was a factor.
