A Maple Street resident and intended target of a drive-by shooting Tuesday returned fire, missing the suspect car and striking two houses.
Several calls reporting shots fired in the area came flooding in to police.
According to a Goldsboro police report, Joseph Bernard Hall, 25, was sitting on his front porch at 1610 Maple St. at 7:45 p.m. when a car began to pass by. Someone opened fire from inside the passing car.
Two other people were inside Hall's home at the time of the shooting, but no one was injured.
Hall returned fire, but instead of hitting the car or the person shooting at him, Hall's bullets entered two houses on the opposite side of the street.
Rounds damaged the exterior of both homes but only penetrated one of the residences.
The driver fled east.
No description of the suspect or the car used in the drive-by is listed on the police report. The weapon used is described only as a handgun.
