The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating a suspicious fire at a residence at 116 N. Slocumb St. Thursday night.
Investigators determined the fire was set intentionally.
A neighbor, Dana Humphrey, told police he was alerted to the fire by a man he sees around the neighborhood sometimes but whose name he does not know.
Humphrey stepped outside at 10:25 p.m. and saw smoke coming from the rear of the house. He then called 911.
According to a police report, the Goldsboro Fire Department responded and found a small fire in the middle of the house.
After putting the fire out, firefighters were able to determine the cause, a mattress that was purposely set on fire.
An estimated $2,000 in damage was done to the house, which is owned by Horace Hodgin of Park Avenue.
