A seventh-grade math teacher at Rosewood Middle School has been named outstanding secondary mathematics teacher of the year for Wayne County Public Schools.

Angie Lewis was recognized Monday night at the school board meeting, with Arnold Flowers, board member, sharing some of her accomplishments.

"Mrs. Lewis is a leader in mathematics," he said. "In addition to serving as the math department chair for her school, she recently served on the district Math Pacing Guide Implementation Team. While on this team, she collaborated with other teams of teachers from various grade levels and schools to align the new math standards with current resources, develop districtwide pacing guides for teachers and to create a timeline for implementation."

The educator has 22 years of teaching experience, eight of those spent at Rosewood Middle. Her teaching techniques have been innovative, he said.

"Mrs. Lewis incorporates a myriad of instructional strategies in her classroom, which include modeling to demonstrate thinking for students, using manipulatives to demonstrate concepts for hands-on learners and utilizing technology in the delivery of learning and assessments," he said. "One activity Mrs. Lewis uses to engage students is the creation of scale models of products to demonstrate how proportions can be used in dimensional analysis, surface area and volume.

"In addition to the model, students write and direct film commercials for their products."

As Wayne County's representative, Mrs. Lewis was recognized recently at the annual N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics, or NCCTM, math conference held in Greensboro. She will also receive a one-year membership in NCCTM and a personalized award.

In addition, her name will appear in the fall issue of the NCCTM journal, the Centroid, and on the association's website.
