The unofficial vote count is too close to determine whether beer will be allowed to be sold within the town limits of Pikeville.
Wayne County Board of Elections Director Rosemary Blizzard said the initial vote tally indicates that the referendum failed, with 117 people voting against the off-premise sale of malt beverages within the town limits and 115 people voting for the measure.
But the determining factor could be the provisional ballots that will not be available until Thursday or later.
"I may know by Thursday (if the referendum failed or passed) with the provisional ballots. But until then, with it being so close, the results might change," Mrs. Blizzard said.
This is the closest to passing the vote to make Pikeville beer-friendly has come in 12 years. In 2002, a similar referendum failed by 25 votes. In 2005, a referendum failed by 32 votes and in 2009, a referendum failed by 23 votes.
