Goldsboro police have no suspects, only strong leads, four days after a 21-year-old mother of three died when a vehicle she was a passenger in was struck by more than 20 bullets.
A second victim, an unidentified male patient, sought treatment at a Sampson County hospital, police said.
"There were a total of four passenger in the vehicle, including the victim," said Maj. Al King, GPD head of investigations.
Shanekqua Adriana Thompson, of North Herman Street, died Friday when the Chrysler Town and Country minivan she was riding in turned off Wayne Memorial Drive onto Sixth Street shortly after 3 a.m.
As the vehicle entered the intersection of Sixth and Humphrey streets, a T-intersection where a paved road meets a dirt road, the bullets continued to be fired.
The minivan came to rest with its front end in the woods, its air bags deployed and doors open. When police arrived, only Ms. Thompson remained in the vehicle.
"There were several different-size caliber shell casings," King said.
He said investigators worked tirelessly throughout the weekend and hit the streets hard again Monday, but it was like taking two steps forward and three steps back.
"We did a lot of legwork, but we have nothing to report at this time."
King said he is scheduled to meet with his team of investigators later today to discuss the case and how to move forward. The identities of the surviving passengers might also be released publicly later today.
For now, police are continuing to ask for anyone with information regarding the murder of Ms. Thompson to come forward. Tips can be placed anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255, or by text to 919-222-4230.
Any information leading to a felony arrest is eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
