Dexter Yelverton takes a step inside the Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County and the memories start playing.

He remembers the days he spent there as a teenager -- how he played in the halls.

"I broke my foot right over there," he said.

Moments later, his trip down memory lane is interrupted as a young girl steps out of a classroom.

Her eyes light up when she sees his face.

The two embrace.

"She used to be one of my students," said Yelverton, the Wayne Middle School physical education teacher.

And her generation, he said, is what brought him to his former stomping ground Monday -- a check in hand.

Yelverton presented club executive director Mary Ann Dudley and development director Jo Heidenreich a $500 check during his trip to the Boys and Girls Club -- a portion of the proceeds raised during the charity cycling event, Bike the Boro, he executed earlier this month.

"I have fond memories of the Boys and Girls Club," he said. "I know how long they've been here and how many kids they've served."

Yelverton said the club serves as a pipeline for the community -- helping to create future leaders out of the kids that pass through its doors.

"They support the school system, education and healthy living," he said.

And so will his check.

Heidenreich said the money would be applied to the Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County's general fund.

Yelverton is not concerned with how the club spends the money.

He knows that, wherever it is used, it will benefit young people.

He, after all, lived it all those years ago within those same walls.
