Once again this year, Wayne County 4-H will take part in the annual Make A Difference Day Oct. 25.

4-H'ers are collecting items to help make toys for the dogs and cats at the Wayne County Animal Adoption and Education Center. They are also collecting food and cleaning supplies.

Anyone wanting to donate any items can drop them off at the Cooperative Extension Office. They will be accepted until 10 a.m. Oct. 25.

Then on Make a Difference Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the youths, volunteers and 4-H staff will make toys out of socks and bottles, decorate ping pong balls with sharpies to make them more fun for the cats, make fleece braid ties and sort the other donated items.

This is the 16th year that Wayne County 4-H has participated in Make a Difference Day. In past year, its members have made care boxes for children in the hospital, because we care bags for foster children and get well bags for the elderly.

They have also gleaned sweet potatoes for the food bank; delivered Meals on Wheels; collected, folded and packaged T-shirts for disaster victims; and collected sheets and blankets for the American Red Cross. Other projects have included Coats for Kids and collecting stuffed animal for local police and fire departments to give to children during a crisis. Make a Difference Day is a national day of helping others, sponsored by USA Weekend and Points of Life Foundation. It started more than 20 years ago, and is always held the fourth Saturday of October. For more information on Make a Difference Day call Summer Young at 919-731-1527.
