Firefighters from the Patetown, Saulston and Antioch volunteer departments, along with emergency services personnel, work the scene of a fatal traffic accident on N.C. 111 North early today. Two people were killed in the head-on accident just after 7 a.m. The cause of the accident had not been determined.

Two people died this morning in a head-on collision between a white utility pickup truck and a red Honda Accord near 3854 N.C. Highway 111 North.

Both vehicles caught fire.

The accident happened just after 7 a.m.

Crews from the Patetown, Saulston and Antioch Volunteer Fire Departments responded and extinguished the flames, but found both drivers had succumbed to their injuries.

At the time of this report, the victims' families had not yet been notified and authorities had not yet released their names.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol and Wayne County Sheriff's Office also responded, as did Wayne County EMS and the Wayne County Office of Emergency Services.

Firefighters worked to remove the victims as state troopers used spray paint cans to mark where the vehicles came to rest.

The cause of the wreck remains under investigation.

Both lanes of the highway were blocked for more than two hours, rerouting traffic in both directions. Crews working the scene had to split when, at 8:37, a separate three-car wreck was called in on nearby Shady Creek Drive.

Fire and EMS units responded at the Shady Creek Drive scene and found only one victim required transport to Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The remaining crews at the N.C. 111 crash continued to work to clear the scene and to reopen the highway.
