MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive Police Department is investigating a Sunday night shooting.

The incident is being investigated as an assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

"Or, to shorten it up, it's attempted murder," Mount Olive police Chief Brian Rhodes said.

The call came in at 10:32 p.m., he said.

Police officers found Braddock Gross, 48, sitting on the steps outside his home at 118 Slocumb St. with "major bleeding," according to a report.

Gross was shot several times in the abdomen, but Rhodes hesitated to confirm exactly how many times he had been hit.

Rhodes said Gross refused to talk or to answer questions, so at this time neither a suspect nor a motive for the shooting is known.

Police on the scene immediately called for an ambulance and Gross was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Officials said today there was no record of Gross being at the hospital.
