A gas station clerk thwarted armed robbers early this morning by locking himself in a back room, according to a police report.
The incident took place at 1:04 a.m. at the Kangaroo gas station at 1601 E. Ash St.
A Goldsboro police office passing by the area saw two individuals "running away from the store and into the dark of night," the report said.
The store clerk, Larry Hicks, 62, then ran outside and flagged the officer down.
Hicks said the men attempted to rob him and one of them displayed a black handgun. When Hicks refused to give them the money, he was struck in the back of the head with the butt of the gun.
He managed to escape and lock himself in the back office. The gunmen then ran from the business, heading north on Jefferson Avenue, according to the report.
The armed robbers are described as black men, one of whom wore a gray hoodie.
