Two Wayne County Public Schools administrators are among 150 nationwide recognized by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for successfully completely work connected to a pilot and field study for National Board Principal Certification.

Dr. Earl Moore, principal at Charles B. Aycock High School, and Carol Artis, formerly principal at North Drive Elementary School and currently director of elementary education for the district, were honored at Monday night's Board of Education meeting for the accomplishment.

Board member Patricia Burden said the distinction represented extensive work defining and creating environments in which teaching and learning thrive for all students and teachers.

"Participation was a challenging and time-consuming process," she said. "The assessment process for National Board certification required Ms. Artis and Dr. Moore to work countless hours beyond the school day to prepare and submit a range of products and performances including data collection and analysis, audio and video artifacts, written plans and reflections, and interviews."

The school administrators were specifically assessed in six areas -- contextual information and strategic school plan, student efficacy and growth, teacher efficacy and practice, parent and community engagement, principal's leadership, growth and reflection, and continuous improvement and accountability.

Moore has been principal at Charles B. Aycock for eight years. He began his education career in 1977 as a business and marketing teacher at Aycock, where he remained for 23 years before going into school administration. He served as assistant principal at Meadow Lane Elementary and was named principal at Brogden Middle School in 2003.

Ms. Artis, an educator since 1986, began her career in Wilmington, returning to her home county the following year to teach at School Street Elementary School. She became an administrator in 2000, first as assistant principal at North Drive and within two years was promoted to the principal role.

In 2012, she was named Principal of the Year for WCPS as part of the Wells Fargo North Carolina Principal of the Year program. She was named to her current position at central office in 2013.
