Goldsboro police and a K-9 unit were unable to track a burglary suspect after responding to a residential breaking and entering on North Virginia Street early this morning.

The incident took place at 3:45 a.m.

Herman Sharper Jr., 54, told Goldsboro police he was awakened by a noise coming from the back of his house at 700 N. Virginia St., according to a police report.

Unknown suspects allegedly forced their way into his home through a screen window in back of the residence. Once inside, the men began going through his items and removed a DVD player and a can of bug spray.

One of the men walked into Sharper's bedroom, at which point the homeowner stood up and chased the men out of the back of the house, the report said.

City police responded to the scene and called for a dog to attempt to track the suspects. The dog was able to track a scent at first, but the trail went cold after a few blocks, according to the report.

The report listed no description of the suspects. The DVD player and the bug spray were recovered.
