Dudley, Mount Olive and Arrington fire departments spent an hour putting out a fire in an abandoned residence Sunday afternoon.

The fire has been ruled suspicious.

Fire crews arrived on scene eight minutes after receiving the alarm at 1:05 p.m. Sunday. The call came in as a structure fire at 4407 U.S. 117 Alt. S., an abandoned residence.

Firefighters forced open the front door of the residence and found no one inside. They extinguished the fire and conducted an investigation to determine where it might have started.

The preliminary investigation concluded the fire began in a back room near the back door of the residence, which was found unlocked.

According to the fire report, the fire was contained to the back room, but smoke damage was apparent throughout the entire home.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office was called in to assume the investigation.

The owner of the residence is not identified on the report.
