Work has resumed on the long-standing Royall Avenue widening project set to add a dedicated left turn lane along Royall Avenue from Sunburst Drive to Berkeley Boulevard, state Department of Transportation officials say.

The project, in the works for almost two years, caused a temporary road closure just past the intersection of Royall Avenue and Sunburst Drive over the weekend and into Monday, said Nicole Meister, communications manager for strategic initiatives for NCDOT.

The $400,000 project was set to be completed last year after the relocation of utilities, but the work stalled.

"They went silent after working on some utility construction," City Manager Scott Stevens said.

The section of road was closed to allow NCDOT workers to upgrade drainage in the area and to extend some pipes.

The entire project is expected to be complete by the end of August.

The contract on a separate NCDOT project in the city opens this month, but when work will begin in Goldsboro is still unclear.

The project to install a median along Wayne Memorial Drive from the U.S. 70 bridge to Country Day Road was set to begin earlier this year but was pushed back due to the contractor's schedule.

The median will not extend through lighted intersections but will eliminate the left turn in all other places.

The project is intended to ease congestion along the corridor.

The project is part of a larger contract NCDOT that will provide for multiple roads to be resurfaced across the area.
