An N.C. State University student from Goldsboro has been chosen as student speaker at his commencement ceremony on Friday.
Joshua Russell Chappell was selected by faculty members from the Department of Chemical and Biomecular Engineering after submitting a speech proposal.
Chappell formerly attended Southern Wayne High School. During his junior year, he was accepted at N.C. School of Science and Math. His senior year, in 2010, he was named a Park Scholar, receiving a full ride to attend N.C. State.
As part of the award, he studied abroad in Valencia, Spain and also participated in a service trip to Salinas, Nicaragua.
While a NSCU, he completed an independent undergraduate research project in the chemical engineering lab of Dr. Gregory Reeves and was senior staff writer for The Technician, the campus newspaper. He also served as director of the Krispy Kreme Challenge, the largest private donor of the N.C. Children's Hospital.
Chappell is graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering. He has accepted a job with Deloitte Consulting in Washington, D.C., one of the largest consulting firms in the nation, in the technology division of the federal practice.
He is the son of John and Jeannie Stevens Barwick of Seven Springs.
