DAR essay contests winners are announced

Members of the David Williams Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held a reception at the Wayne County Museum recently for students who wrote essays for the American history, Christopher Columbus and Good Citizen Awards competitions.

There were 150 American history essays written and 94 Christopher Columbus essays.

Each student received a certificate of appreciation and a desk flag from Woodmen of the World. Each grade level winner received a check from the DAR chapter.

Schools represented were Grantham, Mount Olive Middle, Northeast Elementary, Eastern Wayne Middle, Norwayne Middle, Eastern Wayne High, Wayne Christian and Wayne Country Day.

Winners of the American history essay contest were Georgia Louise Gurley, grade 5; Joseph Vincent Democko, grade 6; Betty Carolina Summerlin, grade 7; and Zander Hunt Pittman, grade 8.

Christopher Columbus essay winners were Sarah Jane Ammons, grade 9; Mary Lindsey Edwards, grade 10; Cameron Andrew DiProfis, grade 11; and Laua McKinly Smith, grade 12.

Good Citizen participants were high school seniors: Jasmine Guercia, Goldsboro High; Elizabeth Murray, Wayne Christian; Hannah Neiman, Eastern Wayne High. Students received a DAR Good Citizen pin, certificate and wallet recognition card.
