Samantha Casey of Selma has been awarded the prestigious National Gen. Hugh Shelton Leadership Scholarship at N.C. State University for 2014-2018.
The General Hugh Shelton National Leadership Scholarship is awarded each year to an incoming freshman at NC State University, who has demonstrated exemplary leadership abilities both in and outside of the classroom.
Samantha Casey, a senior at Princeton High School, has been presented with the scholarship for her admirable dedication to her studies as well as her service to her community. This scholarship is sustained annually through the General Hugh Shelton Leadership Endowment in the NC State Foundation. The endowment will provide assistance for tuition and living costs, as well as a stipend for enrichment activities such as leadership seminars and retreats, study abroad opportunities, and internships.
The scholarship is awarded by the Gen. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center at N.C. State. A native of North Carolina, Gen. Shelton was the 14th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, from 1997-2001.
Samantha Casey is the daughter of Daniel and Judith Casey.
She plans on attending N.C. State to study textile engineering.
Excelling both in and outside of the classroom, Casey has a very diverse range of involvement in her local community.
She has volunteered in the department of radiology at her local hospital to gain relevant insight and experience. Casey plans on also joining the WISE Village (Women in Science and Engineering) and the Shelton Scholars and the Centennial Scholars programs. She has also been awarded the prestigious Centennial Scholarship through the College of Textiles.
She spent two months in and out of Duke Children's Hospital to undergo treatment three years ago which fueled her inspiration to assemble and deliver ninety-five care packages to children at the hospital for her senior project. She hopes to continue this venture and expand it to several other children's hospitals in the area.
In addition, Casey plays the fiddle as the lead member for her bluegrass band "Samantha Casey & The Bluegrass Jam," playing more than 50 venues a year.
She has also served as a team leader for the Shelton Challenge summer leadership program.
