Commissioners planning to discuss furniture for new Mount Olive library

Wayne County commissioners Tuesday will consider a proposal to purchase furniture for the new Mount Olive Steele Memorial Library that is expected to open in May.
An agenda briefing will start at 8 a.m. followed by the formal session at 9 a.m. Both will be held in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the county courthouse annex.
The meeting was rescheduled from March 4 to allow the commissioners to attend the National Association of Counties' annual conference, which was held in Washington, D.C.
At 3 p.m., commissioners will attend the N.C. Association of County Commissioners' Economic Development Task Force listening tour at the Chef & Farmer, 120 W. Gordon St., Kinston.
Wayne County Public Library director Donna Philips and county purchasing manager Noelle Woods will present the furnishings proposal from Interior Systems in Washington, N.C.
The company will utilize state contract prices to provide lower costs. The county budgeted $500,000 for the furniture.
The proposed total to be presented Tuesday is $279,116.18.
Additional furnishings, not available through Interior Systems, also will be needed, making the final cost just under $300,000.
Also on the agenda Tuesday is a work session on the N.C. Association of County Commissioners legislative goals for the General Assembly short session, which starts in May.
Establishing a public hearing date on a rezoning request is the sole item on the board's consent agenda.
Interim County Manager George Wood is recommending the hearing be scheduled for 9:15 a.m. on April 15 in the commissioners' meeting room.
The request is to rezone a lot at 542 N.C. 581 from Residential 10 to Community Shopping.
In other business:
* Commissioners will consider scheduling a planning retreat for April 8 starting at 8 a.m. at Walnut Creek Country Club.
* Cooperative Extension Director Kevin Johnson and J.R. Odom of Odom Farming Co. will make a presentation on the "We Dig It: Ag Days" program for second-graders in Wayne County Public Schools. The free event will be held March 21 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Odom Farming Co., 1380 Claridge Nursery Road.
* Wood will update commissioners on Wayne County Public Schools projects.
* Officials with Eastpointe Human Services will update commissioners about the agency.
Public comments will be taken at 10 a.m. People will have four minutes to speak on their topic of choice.
