A 70-year-old woman took out a city-owned fire hydrant at Beech Street and North Audubon Avenue Monday when she swerved to avoid colliding with another vehicle, according to a Goldsboro police accident report.

Julie Talton Bridgers, of 2001 Granville Drive in Goldsboro, was heading east on Beech Street when another driver ran a stop sign, the report said.

Ms. Bridgers avoided the vehicle, but her 2006 Honda SUV came to rest with its front driver side tire against the hydrant, damaging both the hydrant and her vehicle.

Ms. Bridgers was unharmed.

The hydrant was damaged to the point water came pouring out, forcing the city and fire department to shut down the mains leading to it.

Police cited the driver of the vehicle that ran the stop sign, Archibald Hanes Pate Jr., 76, with failure to stop at a stop sign.

The cost estimate of damage to the fire hydrant is listed on the report at $3,500.
