A Norwayne Middle School student struck by a car this morning at a bus stop on Rose Road in Pikeville received non-life threatening injuries as she crossed the street to board a waiting school bus.
Wayne County Public Schools Communications Director Ken Derksen confirmed the eighth-grader was transported by Wayne County EMS to Wayne Memorial Hospital for observation.
Derksen said the bus was stopped and students were in the process of boarding.
Initial reports indicate the driver of the vehicle failed to yield to the flashing lights and stop sign extended from the school bus.
"According to the transportation board and the bus driver's report, the vehicle was approaching the bus, the driver honked his horn to alert the student and the driver did not attempt to stop."
Troopers with the N.C. State Highway Patrol are still investigating the incident.
Neither the name of the injured student nor that of the driver had been released at the time of this report.
Parents of students in the area said speed is an on-going issue in the area of the bus stop.
