Man, 43, charged in Wednesday shooting

A Wayne County man is in jail today under a $150,000 secured bond following a Christmas day shooting.
The victim, not yet identified, was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Johnnie Allen Jernigan, 43, of 1558 Old Smithfield Road, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, according to a press release issued late Wednesday by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Jernigan was the subject of an investigation into a shooting into an occupied vehicle that took place earlier in the day, according to the release.
The press release did not indicate exactly when or where the shooting took place.
Officials with the Sheriff's Office are withholding comment until Friday morning due to reduced staffing over the holiday.
