The Wayne County Animal Adoption and Education Center has recently had a high number of dogs coming to the shelter, and is urging anyone with room in their home to adopt one during the holidays.
There is a $50 nonrefundable fee to adopt a dog and a $10 rabies fee for dogs 4 months and older.
Anyone 18 or older can adopt a dog from the shelter. To adopt, visit the shelter Monday through Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m. or the first and third Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Complete the adoption application. When it's approved, you can walk through the building to pick out your dog, or if you have already seen one online you want, let the shelter staff know. Once you pick out your canine friend, you can take him or her to an adoption visitation room to spend some time with him. Then you'll fill out some paperwork. After paying the fee, the dog is yours to take to his or her new home.
The shelter is located at 1600 Clingman St. The phone number is 919-731-1439.
You also will have to fill out a contract stating your new pet will be spayed/neutered within 30 days of adoption.
The Wayne County Humane Society offers a reduced cost spay/neuter assistance program. You can find out more by calling the group at 919-736-7387.
