A man driving a Dodge Ram 2500 with a trailer in tow died Sunday when his vehicle went off the overpass on U.S. 117 Bypass and fell 23 feet onto N.C. Highway 55 in the eastbound lane, the state Highway Patrol said.

Craig Moore, 30, of Shallotte, was alone in his vehicle and was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.

"He was heading south on 117 when he ran off the road to the right and struck the bridge. The truck then went over the side of the overpass falling onto 55," NCHP First Sgt. Jerry Burton said.

"The trailer stayed up on 117," Burton said.

Burton added that inattention was the contributing factor to the wreck. The Mount Olive Police Department, the Mount Olive Fire Department and the Wayne County EMS also responded to the scene.

The accident Sunday was one of 10 fatal wrecks the Highway Patrol investigated statewide over the Thanksgiving weekend, according to a press release from the patrol.

That's one less death than last year.
