The Southern Wayne High School Athletic Boosters will hold its second annual Pigskin Cook Off and Plate Sale Friday and Saturday at the school.

"We had such a great time last year," said Lynn Williams, Booster Club secretary. "We had people from the community who came out and cooked pigs all night, parents who turned out to cut and wrap desserts and students who helped us make plates and serve people in the cafeteria.

"The whole event just had this energy and spirit as everyone came together around Southern Wayne. We are really looking forward to it again this year."

The event last year raised $15,000 with the help of 15 different teams. Proceeds benefit Southern Wayne athletics and other school-wide initiatives. This year's goal is 25 teams.

Beside raising funds for Southern Wayne High School, this year's event will up the ante by making the winner an official competitor in the 2014 North Carolina Whole Hog Barbecue State Championship.

"We had a number of requests that we make this event a sanctioned competition, and we've already seen a lot of interest from prospective teams," said Belinda Parent, Booster Club president. "Our ticket sales will determine the number of teams we can field, so we are pushing tickets pretty hard in these next few weeks."

The overall winner from last year was the Pure T BBQ team led by Charles Mozingo and sponsored by the Mt Olive Pickle Co. The Tri-County Electric team - Forever Karen -- led by Nickie Brock, won Best of Show.

Cook teams will get started at 8 p.m. Friday, during the Southern Wayne-New Bern varsity football game. Judging is set to start at 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

The plate sale will run Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
