Hillbilly Hike planned for Saturday

It's that time of year again, time for country bumpkins and local yokels to trudge their way through the mud, sludge and sometimes blood for a T-shirt Saturday at Old Waynesborough Park.

The Hillbilly Hike 5K mud run begins at 8 a.m. this Saturday and heats will run every half hour until 11 a.m. An awards ceremony will follow around noon.

"There will be some changes to the course this year for sure," Parks and Recreation Director Scott Barnard said. "The hay mountain is going to be different than both hikes. The outhouse will be similar -- we didn't have that in the original hike at Waynesborough."

While the staples of the race are still there, new elements will greet the runners as well.

Barnard said among the changes will be a low-crawl underneath a bus and a "redneck fabulous linoleum slide."

Other new elements this year will be the postman's bridge and an improved obstacle that has the event planners charged with energy.

About the obstacle, Barnard said, "It's all about the amps not the voltage."

Online registration for the race closes at noon on Friday, but race day registration will be open for heats with space available.

Registration is $75 for an individual and $300 for teams of four to race in the event.

A lifejacket is required for the September race for a tube float down the Neuse River and only ages 16 and over may compete.

Proceeds from the race will go to Homes for our Troops.
