Alan Hawkins and Ashleigh Carter share a kiss after he proposed -- and she said, "Yes."

A few birdies and a good golf game led to an even better day when Alan Hawkins proposed -- successfully -- to his girlfriend -- now fiancee -- Ashleigh Carter, on Hole 7 at the Southern Wayne Country Club.

For Ms. Carter, the event was a complete surprise.

She had started out the Par 5 hole with a great drive down the fairway leading to the green located on an island.

On her fourth stroke she dropped the ball 20 feet away from the pin.

Then, she sunk the putt.

Hawkins went to retrieve the ball, but when she approached, he was kneeling with ring in hand and question ready.

"Will you marry me?" he said.

"I thought he was going to say good job on the putt," she said.

After the champagne was uncorked, Ms. Carter was still in shock.

"That was awesome," she said. "I don't know how you came up with that."

"I'm a bad, bad man," he replied.

The couple have been dating for the last seven months, but have known each other for more than four years.

When they met, they were both in other relationships, but Hawkins admitted to having a "thing for her."

"He's the whole package," his fiancee said. "It's great."

"I had to wait for the right one," he added.

The two celebrated at the end of Hole 7 with family and friends, as the line of golfers at the beginning of the hole waited to tee off.

"Let them wait," Hawkins said. "This doesn't happen every day."

The grins continued.

"I feel good. I had a great round of golf. I hit a couple of birdies. I was excited. I thought I'd be nervous," he said.

"That's the crazy thing," his fiancee added. "I'm doing better than a normal round of golf."

The only problem?

"I don't know if I can finish these last two holes," Ms. Carter said, smiling.
