City building coming down

Demolition on the exterior walls of the former Arts Council of Wayne County building began Monday after the asbestos abatement was completed.
The project, bid out to A K Grading and Demolition for $197,000, is set to be completed by Aug. 18.
Asbestos removal began on the building at 2406 E. Ash St. in May.
Goldsboro City Council approved an additional $22,500 to be paid for asbestos removal not included in the original estimate at its meeting Monday night. The additional asbestos was not in plans used for estimating the cost of removing the asbestos.
This brings the total cost of the demolition to $219,500.
The building was purchased by the city from the Arts Council of Wayne County in July 2011 for $500,000, allowing the organization to move to its current location on John Street.
The intent was to renovate the building as an Air Force museum, a venture that was shown to be too expensive without private financial backing after $163,500 was spent in consulting fees to learn the price tag for a museum would be upwards of $8 million.
The City Council then decided to demolish the building and adjacent concrete silo structure after an appraisal showed the value of the property at $455,000 with the structures and $518,000 without them.
The contract to demolish the building covers asbestos abatement, demolition of the building and silo and filling in the building's water fountain.
When the demolition is done, only the parking lot and the brickwork around the silo will remain.
