The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating what is being called an attempted murder after a man was struck in the face twice with a hammer.

Leodis Hamlin Jr., 36, 207 Pearson St. was found unconscious by police in an open field Saturday about 2 p.m. in the 900 block of North John Street.

Officers were investigating a report of a man being beaten when they discovered Hamlin, according to a police report.

A press release issued by the Goldsboro Police Department late this morning said Hamlin was involved in an altercation with Jerry Audrey Parks, 39, of 910 N. John St. early Saturday afternoon, and that Parks returned to the scene with a claw hammer.

Hamlin was struck once in the face and once in the forehead. Parks then allegedly stomped on Hamlin's head with his foot several times before fleeing the area.

Hamlin was taken to the Wayne Memorial Hospital emergency room for treatment and then transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, according to the report.

Officials at Vidant today said they had no patient listed under that name.

A warrant for Parks' arrest has been issued. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is asked to contact investigators at 919-580-4213, or call Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255.
