Murder suspect remains in jail

Tyree Louis Simmons, 23, died on the kitchen floor of the home he ran to for help after being shot in the chest Saturday night.
The alleged shooter, Stevie Denardo Simmons, 41, was in custody by Sunday morning.
Goldsboro police said in a press release Sunday that Simmons, of 317 Hollowell St., was shot during an altercation at about 10 p.m. at 610 W. Walnut St., the home of the alleged shooter, Stevie Simmons, a man police say shares the victim's surname but is not related.
"They were acquaintances but not blood-related," Sgt. Dwayne Dean of the Goldsboro Police Department said today.
Dean said police are still in the process of interviewing people and following up on evidence.
"This is not a closed case yet," Dean said.
Stevie Simmons was arrested at Goldsboro Police Headquarters at 5:30 a.m. Sunday. He was charged with an open count of murder and is currently being held in the Wayne County Jail awaiting a first appearance in Wayne County District Court today.
According to a press release, Tyree Simmons ran from Stevie Simmons' West Walnut Street residence to the house on the corner, 101 Georgia Ave.
According to the incident report, a witness there said the victim's shirt was covered in blood.
The 911 call went out at 9:48 p.m.
"The resident called, not Mr. Simmons," Dean said.
By the time police and emergency medical personnel arrived, the victim had no pulse and was pronounced dead.
The scene outside 101 Georgia Ave. on Saturday night was crowded and thick with tension.
Blue lights and yellow crime scene tape surrounded the house.
Georgia Avenue was blocked off by police cruisers at both ends as onlookers gathered in small groups, many of them sobbing and talking in whispers.
A woman, possibly related to the victim, went up and down the street screaming, "Who did this.? Who is it?"
One man doubled over in tears and was inconsolable as three female companions escorted him away by the arms.
