A man and his wife both died of their injuries following a wreck that shut down a portion of North Berkeley Boulevard for more than an hour Monday.

According to a Goldsboro Police report, Larry Bishop, 69, and Betty Bishop, 74, of Mount Olive, were both severely injured in the accident.

Ms. Bishop died shortly after being taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital. Her husband was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he later died.

Fire trucks and police cruisers blocked traffic between Mall Road and Langston Drive on N. Berkeley Blvd. just after 3 p.m. as firefighters and Wayne County EMS workers pulled the victims from the wreckage.

Witnesses said that Bishop, who was driving the couple's 2006 Cadillac south on North Berkeley Boulevard just before 3 p.m. Monday, appeared to have been slumped over at the wheel, apparently suffering from low blood sugar. The vehicle veered across the roadway into oncoming traffic.

Several northbound vehicles swerved to avoid the oncoming car before it sideswiped one vehicle and then another. Bishop's car then struck a third vehicle head-on.

The driver of the vehicle they collided with, Larry Nathan Hicks, 60, of 172 Fallin Road, was also taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital for treatment.

No charges were filed.
