Special Olympics Summer Games winners announced

Wayne County sent 13 athletes and 6 coaches and chaperones to participate in the 2013 Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games held in Raleigh. Wayne County athletes participated in aquatics and track and field events. Aquatics events included free style, backstroke and relay events. Other categories included running, shot put, softball throw and long jump events. The athletes garnered a total of 22 medals and 12 ribbons.

Athletes award recipients included Robert Benson, one gold medal, a fourth place and a fifth place ribbon; Scott Britt, one gold and one bronze medal; Jonathan Delano, one bronze medal and a sixth-place ribbon; Shannon Moore, one silver medal and a fourth-place ribbon; Jarnell Parker, a silver medal, a bronze medal and a fourth-place ribbon; John Ragan, a gold medal and a bronze medal; Miguell Sheffield, a gold medal, a silver medal and a bronze medal; and Chris Underwood, a bronze medal and a fourth-place ribbon. The team was coached by Roy Tate, Daniel Moses and Michael Kervaski.

Athletes competing in aquatics were Jenifer Cruz, a gold medal and a bronze medal, plus fourth-place and seventh-place ribbons; Jesse Martinez, gold, silver and bronze medals, one each, and a fourth-place ribbon; Jessie McCracken, a gold medal and a fourth-place ribbon; Heather Pardue, a silver medal, a bronze medal and a fourth-place ribbon; and Hunter Summerlin, a silver medal and fourth-place ribbon. The team was coached by Richard Kendall and Donna Countryman.
