Severe weather could affect local graduations

Three high school graduation ceremonies this weekend could be affected by the weather prognosis.

Ken Derksen, director of communication services for Wayne County Public Schools, said the district is monitoring the weather situation and making contingency plans. Friday is the last day of classes for students and it is an abbreviated day, with little chance of there being after school activities. But certainly graduations fall under that classification, he said.

Spring Creek High School already holds its event indoors, so will not be affected. Graduation will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Kornegay Arena at Mount Olive College.

Rosewood High School, which is perhaps the most in jeopardy, is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. on the Hardy Talton Athletic Field. In the event of rain, ceremonies will be moved indoors to the gym, with students limited to six tickets each for guests.

In the case of severe weather, it will be postponed until Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in the gym, Derksen said.

Charles B. Aycock and Eastern Wayne high school ceremonies are slated for Saturday at 9 a.m. Should weather create a problem for the outdoor ceremonies, they will be rescheduled for 9 a.m. Monday.

Derksen said updates will be made to the district's website, waynecountyschools.org.
