Kenly man sentenced to life on federal drug charges

A Kenly man Tuesday was sentenced in federal court to life in prison on drug charges involving almost 5 kilograms of cocaine.

David Neil Phillips, 38, was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge James C. Fox to life imprisonment, followed by supervised release for the remainder of his life.

Phillips pleaded guilty on Nov. 6, 2012, to one count of conspiracy to manufacture, distribute, and dispense and possess with intent to distribute 500 grams or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine and 5 kilograms or more of cocaine, and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

According to the investigation, from September 2008 until August 2011, Phillips is accountable for 47.0206 kilograms of cocaine, 12.8864 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, and 140 grams of methamphetamine.

Phillips also had firearms during the drug-trafficking activities.

The Johnston County Sheriff's Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation investigated the case.
