A 19-year-old woman was shot outside of the Manhattan Grocery and Deli located at 901 S. Slocumb St. two minutes before 8 p.m. Tuesday.
The Goldsboro Police Department is investigating the shooting of Renisha Lashonda Todd, of 1204 Brewington Court, who was struck in the leg and back by bullets fired toward the convenience store.
Sgt. Dwayne Dean of the police department's investigations division said police are not sure if Ms. Todd was the intended target of the shooting.
"We still haven't deduced that yet. She was not the only one standing in that area," Dean said.
Witnesses could not provide much detail about what happened.
According to the police report, the shots came from the direction of Slocumb Street, but officers used flashlights to try to locate shell casings on both sides of the convenience store and in front of a residence next door.
It was noisy and hot as onlookers packed the open field area across the street from the deli. Cars wove around the yellow caution tape, and police cruisers blocked the streets, forcing officers to reconfigure the perimeter.
Additional ambulances had to be called in to care for some of those who were at the scene -- possibly relatives of the victim -- who collapsed in the combination of heat and emotion.
EMS workers held one woman down for several minutes trying to stabilize her before loading her into a waiting ambulance for transport to Wayne Memorial Hospital. A neighborhood resident said the woman was the victim's mother, but officials weren't able to confirm that identification.
Police have not yet indicated whether there are any suspects in the case. The investigation is ongoing.
