A Norwayne Middle School eighth-grader who has won first place prizes in the Wayne County Public Schools' science fair for the past three years, earned second place at the state event.

David Williamson had won first place in the technology and engineering category for grades 6-8 locally in January, then went on to win again at the Southeast Regional Science Fair, held in February at UNC-Wilmington. He also won the U.S. Air Force outstanding performer science and math award in the junior division.

His project, "No More Power Cords: The Use of Resonant Inductive Coupling to Wirelessly Transmit Electricity," earned him a second-place finish at the N.C. Science & Engineering Fair this past weekend at Meredith College in Raleigh. He received $75 and was also nominated to compete in the Broadcom MASTERS, a national contest held in Washington, D.C.

The state event, open to grades 3 through 12, featured more than 300 students from across North Carolina presenting their original research projects in science and engineering. More than 70 awards were handed out.
