One person was killed and another transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital with minor injuries following an accident on Hood Swamp Road Tuesday.

An accident late Tuesday afternoon ended in the death of a county woman.

Authorities identified the victim of the crash on Hood Swamp Road as Belva Jackson of Hare Road.

N.C. State Highway Patrol Supervisor First Sgt. Jerry Burton said Ms. Jackson, 58, was heading west on Hood Swamp Road when she crossed the center line.

"She sideswiped an oncoming vehicle, then went off the road to the left, struck a ditch and came to rest in a field," Burton said.

She died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle Ms. Jackson collided with, M.C. Wright, 50, of Mark Edwards Road, suffered only minor injuries. Her car went off the road to the right and struck a mailbox, Burton said.

Ms. Jackson was found to be at fault in the accident, and was not wearing her seat belt.

Seat belt violations are one of the primary violations troopers look for when out on patrol, Burton said, and this is exactly why.

"Seat belts save lives," he said.
