Jury selection began Monday in the murder trial of Alonza Ervin Barnes, a Goldsboro man arrested in May 2012 for allegedly stabbing his own brother to death during a fight.
Goldsboro police found 35-year-old Charles Ervin Barnes dead inside his home at 808 N. Virginia St., just before 1 a.m. on May 12, 2012. His girlfriend, Carletha Perry, called 911 to report that the two brothers, who shared the residence, were fighting inside the home.
Investigators dismissed initial reports that the stabbing was an accident, saying that the fight began outside the home and led to the kitchen area back inside. That is where Charles Barnes' body was discovered.
Alonza Barnes was taken into custody at the scene and has been held since without bond.
