Commissioners start budget talks

Wayne County commissioners will meet next week in two special sessions to hear budget presentations from county department heads.
The presentations, that have been held for a number of years as the county prepares its budget, will be held Monday and Wednesday in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the Wayne County Courthouse Annex.
The Monday session will get under way at 11 a.m. and is expected to last until 5 p.m. The Wednesday meeting is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. and last until 5 p.m.
The tentative departmental presentation schedule for Monday is:
* 11 a.m. to noon: Solid Waste, Board of Elections, Tax Department
* 1 to 2 p.m.: Register of Deeds, Inspections, Information Technology
* 2 to 3 p.m.: Mapping/GIS, Planning Department, Veterans Services
* 3 to 4 p.m. Office of Emergency Services, Emergency Medical Services, Services on Aging
* 4 to 5 p.m.: Facility Services, Soil and Water, Cooperative Extension
The tentative departmental presentation schedule for Wednesday is:
* 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.: Day Reporting Center, Sheriff's Office, Detention Center
* 2:30 to 4 p.m.: Wayne County Development Alliance, Health Department, Wayne County Public Library, Communications/Public Relations
* 4 to 5 p.m.: Animal Control, Human Resources, Department of Social Services.
The PowerPoint presentations will be approximately 15 minutes long.
County Manager Lee Smith has asked department managers to address the following questions in their presentations:
* What is your department responsible for?
* What issues do you see with upcoming budgets from the state/federal governments and affects it may have on your budget?
* What trends do you see for your department as it relates to the economy, clients, customers, revenues, expenditures, etc.?
* What are your department goals? How do you intend to accomplish them? What resources will be needed?
* What is your total budget and how much of your budget is funded by the county?
* Is your department mandated by law (state or federal)?
* How many employees work in your department, full-time and part-time?
Smith is working on a budget schedule and is expected to present it to the board at its regular session on Tuesday.
