Members of the Arr-Mac Water Response Team, along with members of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office Dive Team, work to recover a stolen vehicle from the Neuse River off N.C. 581 South at Price's Landing. The SUV was reported stolen five days ago from Holly Springs.

A 2010 Chevrolet Equinox stolen from Holly Springs last week was pulled out of the Neuse River Monday, about a quarter of mile down river from the boat ramp at Bill Lane Boulevard.

No body was found inside and no one was thought to have been in the vehicle at the time it was dumped.

Officials with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office said the sport utility vehicle was reported stolen Wednesday from a residence at 106 Stobhill Lane.

The N.C. Forest Service had to be called in to clear a path through the wooded area along the bank of the river with a bulldozer.

The crew then used a winch, tethered by a cable to the vehicle by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office Dive Team, to hoist the truck up the steep embankment and onto the cleared path.

The Arr-Mac Water Response Team and volunteer fire department assisted with the recovery.

Sheriff's deputies could not yet say whether the stolen vehicle was taken simply for a joy ride or if it had been used in the commission of a crime. For now they plan to turn the vehicle and any evidence recovered to the Fuquay Varina Police Department, where the stolen vehicle report was taken.
