Wayne students chosen for state honors chorus

Eight students from Wayne County Public Schools were chosen for the North Carolina Elementary and High School Honors Choruses.
Students from across the state auditioned to become part of the 150-170-member choruses, sponsored by the N.C. Music Educators Association. After weeks of learning parts, the group came together to rehearse and perform at the historic Stevens Center in Winston-Salem.
Wayne County has representation each year in the event, officials said.
This year's local participants included Knowledge Broadie and Giovonnii Nelson, from Carver Elementary School; Blinson Frederick, Dellany Frederick, Ana Girardi and Hailey Goff, from Fremont STARS Elementary; Sam Childers from Eastern Wayne High; and Demarcus Kelly from Southern Wayne High.
The honors chorus provides students the opportunity to perform under a nationally known choral conductor, explained Rick Pridgen, school board member, when students were recognized earlier this week.
"Students are required to audition a voice part of a selected piece before a judge, who scores each person on skills such as breathing, posture, articulation, pitch and musicianship," he said.
He also pointed out that in the history of the competition, Demarcus Kelly was the first student from Southern Wayne to be chosen for the state's high school chorus and Sam Childers was the second student selected from Eastern Wayne High.
