A 2009 Eastern Wayne High School graduate has been named Miss Winston-Salem State University.
Ashley Nicole Mozingo, 21, is a senior at the school, with plans to graduate in May with a degree in justice studies.
The 2012-13 title positions her as the "face of the university," which she said was beneficial when she started an organization on campus.
"PINK," which stands for "prima donnas in need of knowledge," drew impressive numbers.
"Eighty came out for PINK," she said. "We took 45 girls."
The emphasis of the organization has been on community service as well as promoting self-esteem among the young women. As one of the activities, the group visited elementary schools and talked with the female students.
"(We wanted) to get younger girls excited about their education, learning about their bodies and about acceptance," she said.
She hopes to parlay that even further once she completes her bachelor's degree.
"I don't want a Plan B because I want my Plan A to work," she said.
Her aspirations include getting a graduate degree and start a non-profit.
"I would like to call it The Underdog Empire," she said. "I don't want to call it a detention center, but a juvenile center.
"I really want to help kids, keep them from going down the wrong path."
Her parents are Cedric and Wendy Mozingo of Goldsboro. She also has a younger brother and sister, Cedric Jr., 15, and Monica, 16, both students at Eastern Wayne High School.
