Lecture on Battle of Goldsborough Bridge Tuesday

The Battle of Goldsborough Bridge will be the topic of the eighth talk in the Foundation of Wayne Community College's series of lectures on American Civil War battles.
Randy Sauls, local historian and founder of the Goldsborough Bridge Battlefield Association, will speak at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 11, in Moffatt Auditorium in the Wayne Learning Center at the college's main campus in Goldsboro.
He will discuss Foster's Raid and the destruction of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad Bridge that crosses the Neuse River three miles south of Goldsboro in December 1862.
The Battlefield Association led by Sauls has developed 32 acres of the battlefield into a park with trails, interpretive markers, a monument and parking. Visitors can see the site of the bridge, fields on which the fight unfolded, and two sets of earthworks. A reenactment of the battle will be held Dec. 14-16 at the battlefield. The series will resume in March 2013. The lectures are free and open to the public with no reservations or registrations required.
