Wayne Memorial Hospital has four registered nurses on this year's list of the state's Great 100 Nurses.

Patricia Austin, Becky Byrd, Kim Muntz and Yvonne Williams, all past recipients of the Nurse Excellence Award at the hospital, were recently recognized with the state honor in Greensboro.

The mission of the Great 100 is to positively impact the image of nursing by recognizing nurse excellence and providing scholarships for nursing education in North Carolina. Each year, 100 nurses from all areas of nursing practice settings in the state are recognized. Candidates are nominated for making a difference through their commitment to excellence.

Ms. Austin earned her diploma in nursing from Lenoir Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and a bachelor's degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2001, she received a master's degree in public administration from Troy State University.

She worked at Wayne Memorial Hospital during the 1980s as an orthopedic nurse before joining the U.S. Air Force as a women's health, obstetrics and gynecology nurse. She returned to Wayne Memorial in 2006 as a nurse in the pediatrics department.

Ms. Byrd has been at the hospital since 1976 and works in the operating room. She earned an associate's degree in nursing at Wayne Community College and a bachelor's degree in nursing at Atlantic Christian College. She is a Certified Operating Room Nurse and has worked in the OR as a staff nurse, specialty team leader and currently is the clinical educator for surgical services.

Ms. Muntz, an employee for eight years, works in the dialysis department. She earned an associatedegree in nursing at Wayne Community College and has more than 19 years of experience as a dialysis nurse.

Ms. Williams earned an associate degree in nursing from James Sprunt Community College and has been at Wayne Memorial Hospital for 26 years. She is a chemotherapy-certified registered nurse and works in the oncology department and for the past six years, has worked with outpatient infusion therapy.
